Where Museums and Galleries Month Begins: Quezon City

The Philippines marks Museums and Galleries Month this October, the national celebration will open in Quezon City. The kick-off ceremony takes place on October 6 at the House of Representatives in the Batasan complex. The exhibit “Unified Spectrums,” presented in partnership with The House, accompanies the opening.

Quezon City, Philippines — The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) leads the observance, which began in 1991 under Presidential Proclamation No. 798. This year’s theme is “Bridging Divides: Preserving the Present for Tomorrow.” According to the NCCA, the theme presents museums and galleries as places where people can encounter shared histories and diverse perspectives, and it encourages programs that reach audiences beyond traditional gallery walls.

Opening in the seat of the national legislature fits that message. Art and heritage are not meant only for specialists. They belong in the places where the country debates and decides its future.

A City Full of Galleries

Quezon City has plenty to offer visitors. On Katipunan Avenue in Loyola Heights, the Ateneo Art Gallery has been collecting and showing Philippine art since 1960, when it was founded around Fernando Zóbel’s collection. It is often described as the country’s first museum of Philippine modern art. Inside UP Diliman, the Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center holds paintings, drawings, and sculptures from the collection of Jorge B. Vargas.

The city also keeps its own history on display. Around the Quezon Memorial Circle are the Museo ni Manuel Quezon, the QCX Museum, and the Presidential Car Museum. The Tandang Sora Women’s Museum honors Melchora Aquino, the Katipunan figure remembered as “Ina ng Katipunan.” Few places pack national memory, revolutionary history, and contemporary art into so small an area.

Events for the Rest of the Month:

The NCCA’s calendar reaches well beyond the capital region:

  • October 3: San Pablo Art Circuit (SAPAC), Laguna

  • October 9 to 12: Tam-awan International Arts Festival, Baguio City

  • October 10: Alab ng Sining, Angono, Rizal

  • October 14 to 18: ManilART 2026, SMX Aura Convention Center

  • October 22: Culminating program during the Cavite Art Fair, Cavite Provincial Capitol

The Mindanao Art Fair in Davao City, led by Lawig Diwa, Inc., is also part of the celebration. The NCCA says digital and hybrid programs, such as virtual exhibitions, will help reach audiences who can’t visit in person.

For readers around Katipunan and the university belt, the simplest way to join in is to visit a nearby gallery. The Ateneo Art Gallery and the Vargas Museum are both within easy reach, and the month is a good reason to go.
